Teaching in the Early Childhood setting.

One of the pleasures of teaching in preschools, and childcare centres is that, for the most part, young children embrace the notion that art and science are interconnected.

In a recent workshop we took a look at the glass sculptures and installations of Dale Chihuly.

There is no shortage of science to explore here.   Kid Cyber has a great page on glass

This activity makes a great introduction to a discussion on the properties of glass and plastic and recycling.

    1. Agreed. Watching children blossom as they develop their social skills, as they navigate the tapestry of human interactions is very rewarding.

The process of making art. Lessons in life.

Inspired by stained glass windows, L aged 7, has planned and created this pony painting. Taking time to arrange ideas and organise materials before realising the final art work is an important and transferable skill.  Children often rush their work because adults rush them. Let's give them time to learn and enjoy the process.  Here L has also learned about colour mixing and values, composition, brush techniques.    ...and had fun doing it.

Cosmic Capers Summer 2024

Cosmic Capers . Space kitties. Rocket ships. Experimenting with paint. Electric erasers. That's a wrap for the Summer holidays.

Term 2 Wrap

A fun way to end term 2 after school art class. The students asked if they could paint on canvas. They agreed on a lily pad and koi painting. This is the work of K, aged 9. Our class is growing and we are having so much fun. Can't wait to see what art adventures next term brings. This was a guided painting lesson. While student led individual designs are celebrated in the studio, this activity allows me to demonstrate brush techniques and paint application. The students report that they enjoy using "real" paint brushes and mixing paint. The photo is a little washed out as one of the studio lights was off.
